Emo Champion: The Last of Her Kind

The honored recipient of the third ever Emo Champion Award is Una, the saddest character ever.

Bamuna of the Reikoku clan is the saddest character ever. She wins this award because she is the saddest character ever. If you need proof, read this.

She started the campaign as a lonely, slightly crazed and bloodthirsty Vorax searching for others of her kind. The first other Vorax she found became the first eyeless of the campaign. The next Vorax went crazy, starved himself and died in her arms. Then she found a flight of dozens of other Vorax only to learn that they were the last Vorax on Karia and they were bent on suicide. At the start of this season she made her break with the Last Flight, desperately hoping it wouldn't come to fruition, but they did at last immolate themselves above Omexon before turning into an Oni and a flock of eyeless in front of her.

When preparing for my interview with Una I made sure to bring four boxes of tissue.

Everyone in the group treats the subject of Una's situation with great tenderness.

"I don't really know what it would be like to be the last one..." Moses said.

Kiyoshi nodded somberly, "None of us do, but..."

"but it must suck, because she's always crying!" High-Dive interrupted.

Kiyoshi scowled, "I was going to say, but she has been incredibly courageous, fighting on like this..."

"And her tears have magical healing powers," chirped the squirrel.

"... many others would have given up..."

"But I'm glad she didn't because she gives the best belly-rubs!"

(At this point Kiyoshi chased High-Dive from the room).

Rei tried to get us back on topic, "Look, Una has experienced, in a way, what we're all facing - extinction. Una knows better than any of us the cost if the Enemy wins, which is why she keeps fighting, I think."

Everyone nodded and fell silent for a bit then.

When Una walked in she saw everyone sitting in silence and hesitated, "Why is everyone looking so glum? Did someone die?"

Awkward looks were exchanged for a second.

"Oh no! It's Kiyoshi isn't! I knew I wouldn't be able to save him!" the tears came rushing right out...

As everyone jumped to correct her mistaken assumption I thought to myself - this is why she is our Emo Champion. She is Una, the last of her kind.

Narrator's Best Friend: The Machine God's Messenger

The Narrator's Best Friend Award goes to the character who most players agree consistently added great stuff to the story be it with NPC's or character choices through the entire season. This prestigious award is accompanied not only by the trophy emblem (right), but by 5, count them 5, of the coveted blue Never Gems. For the first time in history we have a draw in the voting, meaning this award will go to two characters. The second of the two honored recipients of the third ever Narrator's Best Friend Award is Moses, the metal messiah.

There are two ways that one can potentially win this seasonal Award. Rei already demonstrated how it can be done by having an in-depth backstory that influences the plot, and a messed up psyche that creates dramatic moments in the game. In Moses' case, his backstory was pretty simple and his psyche is perhaps the healthiest in the bunch. The other way to win this award, then is to be a straight-forward mover and shaker when it comes to determining what happens in-game. Moses is definitely that. Early in this season it was his connection with the Rusty Nail Rogues that set up several sessions worth of adventure. It was partially his drive to follow the instructions in his dream that took the party across the ocean, and he was the one at the end who urged the return to Geneva Prime. The arc of this story has a great big Moses shaped thumb-print on it.

Which is why I was so excited to talk to him about what it was like to be an architect of world-changing events...

"Um, I don't know much about that," he modestly replied.

He'd been similarly deferent last time I interviewed him. Looking at his shiny new chassis, and foxy bitch, I knew better than to accept the humble act this time around.

Una had more to say on the subject, "Oh, Moses? He's a miracle worker. Literally, there have been more than one or two situations where we wouldn't have gotten out if it weren't for him."

Rei emphatically agreed, "I would follow Moses to the end of the world - and I have. Even off the world, come to think of it."

And his partner Zipporah? "He thinks he's following some kind of Machine God, but I say the Machine God is him!"

There was some awkward silence after that last part and Moses quickly discovered he had something to do in another room.

As usual Kiyoshi was the one to get things back to a serious tone. "Moses is wise to keep humble. We're not Gods - that's what our Kyo Tee Shee want us to think. We are servants, as for Moses, maybe he's a messenger. He certainly has a message for Katashi Blade and I intend to hear him deliver it."

There you have it - Moses: the Machine God's Messenger, and certainly the Narrator's Best Friend.

Narrator's Best Friend: The Girl With First Mind Eyes

The Narrator's Best Friend Award goes to the character who most players agree consistently added great stuff to the story be it with NPC's or character choices through the entire season. This prestigious award is accompanied not only by the trophy emblem (right), but by 5, count them 5, of the coveted blue Never Gems. For the first time in history we have a draw in the voting, meaning this award will go to two characters. The first of the two honored recipients of the third ever Narrator's Best Friend Award is Rei, the psionic scion.

The red-eyed, leather-clad assassin easily belongs in this category because of the degree to which her backstory has always been out front. From the very first episode of the first season, clashes with Rei's family have provided interest and drama to the storyline, but in this season Rei really popped out. She met her creator, Inase Spark, with whom she'd been interacting via his journal during the second season. Her sister Aimi provided some of the most intense party conflicts of the season, and Rei herself heightened the party drama with her lies to Kiyoshi and eventual apparent betrayal of the party to the First Minds. I was thrilled to get to chat with Rei behind-the-scenes about her effect on the plot.

"I figure that every party has to have its 'troubled' character," she confided to me while sampling some of the vegetarian finger food our caterers provided. "What could be more troubled than a girl with a tenuous psychological hold on her sense of self who was a former assassin with nebulous ties to our enemies? If that isn't bad enough I make a point of defending my family even when they do things that are pretty horrible, and of course there is the fact that I am made with genetic material taken from the cosmic Enemy themselves. You'd have to try pretty hard to come up with someone more messed up than me."

Undoubtedly. But for all her unique qualities Rei can be remarkably humble.

"I don't really like my psychoses, however grand, to take center stage in the campaign too often. I mean, I'm quite happy just to make my amoral judgments in silence and get things done quietly - that's the way we assassins do things."

Unfortunately for Rei, her morality keeps getting dragged out into the spotlight by her party members who seem to think it's a big deal who she does and doesn't kill, and how. Moses in particular makes an issue of it.

"Rei is sometimes too much like her Kyo Tee Shee," he said. "Fortunately she is a little easier to dissuade from doing really horrible things, but you have to keep a lookout."

"Indeed," Kiyoshi readily agreed, "I have been worried for some time now about her reliability. Keibatsu hungers after her like the Enemy, she can teleport like the Hei-Shi, and she apparently is capable of masquerading as a First Mind. There are some heavy questions she will have to answer soon."

It may make some of her friends uncomfortable, but in terms of adding to the excitement of the story there can be no question that the ambiguities surrounding Rei are an asset.

"It's not like she's the only one in our group who has her dark moments," Una said by way of explanation.

I thought that summed it up well. The dark moments are the reason that Rei is one of our Narrator's Best Friends, and why everyone pays attention to the girl with First Mind eyes.

Kick-Ass Queen: A Ball of Fur and Fury

The Kick-Ass Queen Award goes to the character who most players agree did the most devastation in the coolest way through the entire season. This prestigious award is accompanied not only by the trophy emblem (right), but by 5, count them 5, of the coveted red Never Gems. The honored recipient of the third ever Kick-Ass Queen Award is High-Dive Bludgeon, the deadliest squirrel ever to crack a nut.

I admit that when I was given this assignment I almost shit myself. It is an honor to get to interview the recipients of these awards, but High-Dive Bludgeon has a bit of a reputation. Being a mere 200 point NPC I was extremely nervous about the prospect of coming face to face with the mammal who put the wild in the word... um, wild. If half of the reports are true, then she is personally responsible for some radical, Oni-scale destruction. So I trembled more than a little when I was told that her agent agreed to the interview.

What can I say about High-Dive? She is a study in extremes. When she is active she is a metabolic force of nature. She moves so fast that she shatters the sound barrier. When she is calm, such as when a companion is rubbing her tummy, then she is like a limp towel. Incidentally, this entire interview took place in the context of an extended tummy-rub. When I tried speaking to her without the manual assist, her answers came back in speech too rapid to be comprehensible, though her close friends do a decent job of interpreting.

"Our relationship with High-Dive," Kiyoshi said cautiously, "is what I would describe as... explosive."

I encouraged him to continue.

"What I mean is, things in High-Dive's vicinity tend to explode. So far those things have not included any party members, so we keep her around."

"Plus," Moses added, "how are you gonna stop her?"

An apt point.

Rei was much more positive about her furry companion. "High-Dive's aggressive tendencies are very useful if carefully encouraged against the right targets. Personally, I consider her presence in our party as something akin to possessing a tactical nuke. When other people know you have one they tend to surrender really fast."

Una had been handed the tonic squirrel subject by this time to continue the rub-fest, so I asked her what she thought of the only other surviving Karian in the group. I was looking for the human interest angle on the story so I encouraged Una, a tragic figure herself, to give me some insight into the troubled psyche of this little squirrel that might explain her violent tendencies.

Una thought for a moment, "Nah, High-Dive just likes to blow shit up."

As for High-Dive herself, the only words she had for this interviewer were, "Did you bring me candy?"

An enigma? Or just one violent little rodent? Either way she is this season's Kick-Ass Queen. She is High-Dive Bludgeon: a ball of fur and fury.

Into The Final Season...

The Third Season has come to an end and the Heroes of Karia Vitalus Awards Ceremony has been held.

In the category of Best Episode of Season Three the group once again broke gaming stereotypes by choosing an episode that contained no combat or action sequences: The Question. This episode stood out from the pack quite simply because it was the largest payoff in terms of exposition in the campaign. Questions that the party had been wanting the answers to since the beginning of the campaign were finally resolved. The Dusk Sages illuminated everyone as to the cosmic nature of the conflict they are involved in and set the party on a course which will either save everything that lives or end in disaster.

In the category of Favorite NPC of Season Three the voters were faced with a glut of choices. Many NPC's from previous seasons made appearances in this one, including early favorites like Aimi. However, the NPC who took the prize by a solid margin was one who has never actually encountered the party in-game, a testimony to the rich interweaving stories we have going on through the blog. That NPC was the unflappable Anakarix sage Jin Kalys. Using his unfailing Nine-Branch Formal Logic, Jin Kalys and his companions were able to spark a dramatic resistance in the city of Stardown with the odd combination of a First Mind artifact and the last Vorax egg on Karia. We all hope that Jin Kalys has more memorable moments in his future.

The player-characters also voted on awards for each other. The winners of these awards will be profiled in subsequent days. As we are now heading into the final season of this action-packed drama, we may not see another awards ceremony after this. Nothing remains, but to watch the exciting climax unfold...

Emo Champion: One Disturbed Little Girl

The Emo Champion Award goes to the character who most players agree provided the most emotional drama through roleplaying through the entire season. This prestigious award is accompanied not only by the trophy emblem (right), but by 5, count them 5, of the coveted green Never Gems. The honored recipient of the second ever Emo Champion Award is Rei, the psychosis made flesh.

Player characters as a species are not known for being psychologically stable, but Rei really exemplifies the unhinged protagonist role. From her shaky concept of self to her sadistic passions brought on by an abusive childhood, Rei gives expression to the breadth and depth of the DSM IV.

"That girl's invented whole new ways to spell 'Fucked up'," Moses told me, in a rare candid moment when he employed his miner vocabulary.

"Indeed, I think we all thank the First Minds that we are not ourselves telepaths and thus we have been spared greater insight into the working of her twisted mind." Even as Kiyoshi said it I could see the others were in agreement.

"We definitely do not want to know what's going on in there," HD added, pointing to Rei and then indicating a giant Sygola nut with eyes full of significance.

But being mentally disturbed by itself is not what earned her the title of Emo Champion this season. Some of her companions have mental issues of their own (Una). What really made Rei stand out above the others was her recent childlike discovery of morality.

"There have been times when I was not certain if Rei was any better than the Oni we are trying to destroy, but lately she has given some hopeful signs," Mokuzai admitted when speaking with me one-on-one. "Occasionally she suggests nonlethal ways of resolving conflicts nowadays, which under the circumstances is pretty miraculous."

There may be hope for Rei actually becoming a good person, as indicated by recent epiphanies - but it's too early to tell.

"I definitely think she has a shot of coming around. I mean, she's threatened Kiyoshi with a shovel various times out of some kind of misguided loyalty to her assassin sister. That's almost noble," Una suggested hopefully.

But not all the signs point uphill for Rei. Her emotional rollercoaster included laughing in glee at the pain of everything living on Karia. Whatever her moral choices in the future they will doubtless lead to further bizarre emotional displays. While she's not exactly the kind of girl who wears her heart on her sleeve, her feelings are still readily apparent. They come boiling out through her eyesockets like virulent acid.

She is Rei. She is our Emo Champion. She is one disturbed little girl.

Narrator's Best Friend: the Singer of Peace

The Narrator's Best Friend Award goes to the character who most players agree consistently added great stuff to the story be it with NPC's or character choices through the entire season. This prestigious award is accompanied not only by the trophy emblem (right), but by 5, count them 5, of the coveted blue Never Gems. The honored recipient of the second ever Narrator's Best Friend Award is Mokuzai, the Peace-loving Prill.

Indeed, it can hardly be doubted that the elderly former guardian of the Song of Tempest was a constant friend to the narrator this past season. The pretext for the entire season was a journey to the Grand Chantry, something which was only possible due to his patient, if frequently exasperated, leadership. Mokuzai calmly helped steer the party in all the right directions - whether that be to recover his staff from Ben Hamor and the revelation of the Gods, or the opening of the sealed chamber and the unraveling of the mysteries. The plot swirled in delicate eddies around the rock of Mokuzai all season long.

Rei and Moses are grateful to the old fox-son for taking on this role. "Last season, in Geneva Prime, the story kept driving us into uncomfortable interactions with my dysfunctional family or Moses' unwilling instigation of a civil war. Frankly it was exhausting, we're glad he took up some of the burden this time around."

Though Moses didn't speak openly about the pains of being last season's recipient of this award, it was clear that he didn't relish being in the spotlight again. "He can have the award every season if he wants it. As long as people stop killing each other and blaming it on me."

Not everyone felt that Mokuzai was the best anchor for the collective storyline however.

"He's a stodgy old man," High-Dive confessed in a back room. "You should have seen how he flips out over a little piss on a stinky book." She would have said more, but just then Una shot her a disapproving glance.

"Mokuzai cares about the legacy of the Dusk Sages," Una contributed. "We shouldn't underestimate how much it has cost him to choose to follow this path, unraveling these mysteries. He's trying to solve the riddle of peace and that's no small thing."

No small thing at all. This distinguished Prill has collected Dusk Sage artifacts and wisdom like nobody's business, and though he knows their histories and names and functions, the rest of the party just refers to them as "plot devices A, B & C".

"Yeah," Kiyoshi quipped "That staff is a damn handy escape trick, and a mask that sees a giant arrow in the sky pointing us in the right direction? I mean, can the GM be any more obvious?"

Mokuzai really is the man who keeps the story moving, and that's why this Singer of Peace is the Narrator's Best Friend.

Kick-Ass King: The Blade of Judgment

The Kick-Ass King Award goes to the character who most players agree did the most devastation in the coolest way through the entire season. This prestigious award is accompanied not only by the trophy emblem (right), but by 5, count them 5, of the coveted red Never Gems. The honored recipient of the second ever Kick-Ass King Award is Daitokuji Kiyoshi, the human cuisinart.

Kiyoshi is a no-nonsense flayer of flesh and destroyer of all who are foolish enough to engage him in melee combat. Wielder of the incomparable First Mind artifact, Keibatsu, he has honed his mind and body to the point that cleaving heads from shoulders is less effort for him than trimming toenails (which is tricky to do with a katana).

Party members will doubtless be haunted in their nightmares by memories of him opening opponents up from shoulder to hip with his blade - or the terrifying revelation that he can in fact shoot silvery phoenixes from his sword attacking foes at range as easily as up close.

"That was a real lifesaver, that technique" Una pointed out. "I used to have to fly him around the battlefield so he could get close enough to do his thing. Now he is much more deadly at any distance."

Rei agreed, "But you really haven't seen Kiyoshi at his full potential unless you've seen him go to work against the Enemy."

Everyone nodded when she said that, though Moses looked vaguely nauseous.

It's true that Kiyoshi is exceptionally gifted at laying the smack down on the eyeless demons that haunt the Cheldrun from across the blackness of space. When putting the dead back to rest, or turning an Oni into sludge, Kiyoshi not only deals catastrophic damage, but perversely he also regains strength he has lost.

"Thank the First Minds for that," Moses said. "In that last Oni fight, it was just me and him left, and I didn't have the firepower to take that demon out. Even though Kiyoshi was naked he seemed invincible, which is really useful, when you think about it."

High-Dive grinned, "Yeah he gave that demon a rough time, though nobody should forget that I dropped a tree on it." Across the room, Mokuzai said nothing, but his glower suggested that he hadn't forgotten.

If you ask Kiyoshi about his sword he gets uncharacteristically shy, "It's my heritage, really. I'm just doing my best to use it as well as my ancestors did."

No doubt. He "inherited" one helluva sword and all the Gogajin ladies hope to see how well he uses it.

He is Daitokuji Kiyoshi, the Blade of Judgment.

Another Season in the Bag...

The Second Season has come to an end and the Heroes of Karia Vitalus Awards Ceremony has been held.

In the category of Best Episode of Season Two the surprising winner was the emotionally charged episode, Don't Cry Sweet Mokuzai. Perhaps it garnered the award for being fraught with human drama as the importance of family and love were pitted against duty and heroism. It does go to show that we have an unusual gaming group when their favorite episode of the season is one which included no combat.

In the category of Favorite NPC of Season Two, the dangerous tiger Kufu narrowly took home the honors. There were a number of other well-loved NPC's from this season, including Edana Griolsa and Elder Winter, but Kufu charmed the most people with his honest malevolence and full-frontal nudity. He will be remembered for ambushing Rei (twice) and crunching on the bones of the psychotic Biomade sniper Eris.

The player-characters also voted on awards for each other. The winners of these awards will be profiled in subsequent days.

Emo Champion: the Tender Samurai

The Emo Champion Award goes to the character who most players agree provided the most emotional drama through roleplaying through the entire season. This prestigious award is accompanied not only by the trophy emblem (right), but by 5, count them 5, of the coveted green Never Gems. The honored recipient of the first ever Emo Champion Award is Kiyoshi the girl-magnet Allskin.

Daitokuji Kiyoshi, second son of a Grand Master of Washisan Academy and patriarch of the Silver Phoenix clan, has an indefinable allure. Perhaps it is the sense he gives of being slightly off-limits that makes women so attracted to him. Perhaps it is his unshakable confidence, or his adorable insistence on following "the tradition", or maybe it is his striking good looks and skill with his blade (rumors suggest it is quite long). Whatever the cause, Kiyoshi has certainly garnered attention lately.

Which is why, today I am bringing you the unseen side of the man who combines the attraction of a noble heart and a daring outlaw. Our readers may be surprised to learn that Kiyoshi himself is quite a sensitive soul. Behind the stoic facade he puts on when entering the void, this samurai is a man who feels pain in a way that no one else does - with every nerve in his body.

"It's true," Rei assured me, "that guy knows what it's like to hurt. From the first moment I met him he was all touchy and stuff."

I ask Rei whether its true that when she met him his father had just been killed in an explosion at the Goshi Corp Tower.

"Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. When people die Kiyoshi seems to feel things. It's weird."

Some of Kiyoshi's companions are more sympathetic. Una, for example, is very fond of his tender side.

"It's a good quality in a nest-mate."

Mokuzai nodded at that, "Compassion is a sign of wisdom."

Of course it isn't his "wisdom" that has made him the subject of so much emotional drama in this campaign. From assisted suicides to crying teenage assassins, Kiyoshi has had to star in some intense scenes, and there's no sign of it letting up anytime soon. Right at the end of the first season he leapt in front of a tentacle attack destined to kill Rei's sister.

Choices like that confuse his companions, especially High-Dive who asked, "What does he see in her? She doesn't bring him exotic nuts."

Exotic nuts or no, the emotional turmoil will probably continue to swirl around this enigmatic figure. He's not just a guy with a really deadly sword. That's why we've brought you the softer side of Kiyoshi: the Tender Samurai.

Narrator's Best Friend: Man, Machine, Legend

The honored recipient of the first ever Narrator's Best Friend Award is Moses the gentle Mechified savior.

At 2 meters in height Moses makes an impression when you first meet him, but despite his rough miner exterior, Moses breaks the mold a little bit with his gentle nature. When you realize that this is a guy who can hammer straight through bedrock and doesn't even have to breathe air if he doesn't want to, the fact that he's so accessible comes as a big surprise. After having seen his face in graffiti for so long, I was almost nervous when I went to do the interview, but he put me right at ease.

"Yeah, Moses is like that," Kiyoshi told me while filling my cup with tea. "I remember the first time I saw him, he was busting into the Goshi Corp Tower and he had a huge hunk of concrete raised over his head, but then he just spent all his energy trying to keep people from getting hurt. I knew right away that he isn't your average rebel leader."

Though he doesn't like to brag about it, Moses really is the catalyst for a lot of the stuff that happens in the campaign. From his spectacular break-in at the Goshi Tower to inspiring a whole army of Mechified to wage war against the oppressive regime of the Biomade Mega-Corporations, Moses has been right in the thick of it. Perhaps most memorable of all was the time he set Goshi up with his own surrender - a debacle that ended with thousands dead or wounded as a battle broke out in the streets.

When asked what he thinks about his companions being so loyal that they would try to rescue him under those circumstances, Moses is characteristically humble.

"I wish they wouldn't," he says in an understated way.

His companions know better than to let such a remarkable man get away from them. He's always teaching them something new. High Dive for example recalls, "He's made me a much more effective saboteur. That whole lefty-loosy thing. I was always getting it backwards before."

"Yeah," Una chimed in, "He's got this way of making you feel like you're fighting for a cause, so when you dig your talons into the enemy it's just so much more fulfilling. Isn't it Moses?"

Moses modestly looked out the window, but heads were nodding all around.

Rei probably articulated what everyone was feeling, "I mean, at first I was just following him so I could assassinate him, but after the things he's shown me. I would follow him anywhere and kill anyone he asked. He's just that special."

Man, Machine, Legend: Moses.

Kick-Ass Queen: One Vicious Raptor

The Kick-Ass King/Queen Award goes to the character who most players agree did the most devastation in the coolest way through the entire season. This prestigious award is accompanied not only by the trophy emblem (right), but by 5, count them 5, of the coveted red Never Gems. The honored recipient of the first ever Kick-Ass Queen Award is Una the Griever-wielding Vorax.

Despite being a member of the most fragile species of Karians, widely regarded as the symbolic bearers of the vitality of Karia, Una makes a statement with her 7' long double-ended Scythe known as a Griever. Carrying a weapon that is taller than she is and standing with a jaunty pose that says, "I know 101 ways to disembowel people who annoy me," Una consistently made her foes, eyeless or otherwise, regret their decision to tangle with a feathered funnel cloud of fury.

Party members recall with admiration and horror moments like the time, after she had buried one curved blade in the neck of an eyeless abomination on the balcony above her, she ran along the wall twisting her weapon till the head popped off and it rained gore.

"Yeah, I was scarred for life by that one. I still see it in my dreams," Moses said.

Not everyone was necessarily negative about it though. Rei, for example, had this to say, "With Una, it's really a spectator art. To the untrained eye one bisected torso looks just like another, but those of us who can appreciate such things notice delicate aesthetic sensibilities."

Even Moses concedes that she really took it to a new level though once she acquired the Blood of the Fallen Vorax technique and began flaying her opponents from the inside out. Mentioning her malice focusing talent gets every head in the room nodding.

"I'm not sure I fully appreciated the potency of that woman until I saw her turn Nero's arm into a gore spattered skeleton," Kiyoshi said, speaking for everyone, in the group. "There's something about that kind of power that demands respect."

"Respect, hell she scares the shit out of me," Rei quipped. "When Mama Pain had Kiyoshi here in the pleasure seat she let me know in no uncertain terms that she could pop my head off like a cork."

High Dive, munching on some candy, perked up then, "Gross."

"Like a cork. Pop."

In the category of Best Episode of Season One, the clear winner was 'Surrender or Else' which also has the distinction of having been the longest episode of this season. During this immortal episode our Heroes' participation in the insurrection of the Underground Mechified Army against Goshi Corp came to a head when Moses, the inspirational leader of the Mechified rebels decided to surrender himself to prevent further violence. Much to his dismay the episode ended in a full-scale civil-war breaking out in the streets.

In the category of Favorite NPC of Season One, another landslide victory gave the award to Aimi. The churlish, sexy, dangerous assassin sibling of Rei and love-interest of Kiyoshi was the group's favorite recurring nemesis. Memorable moments include her sticking her knife in Moses, or Kiyoshi or even Garandou Oni and paralyzing them. Was it her potent blade or her startling eyes?
